SELECTION
Student Selection Process s
|
Selection of course participants will be conducted in an ethical and responsible manner in accordance with the requirements of the relevant Training Package. Coonara Community House Inc. will, at all times, comply with the requirements of equal opportunity legislation in the selection and assessment of students. Students may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process. Students will be placed in courses in order of application providing that they meet entry requirements. Once a class is full, students will be placed on a waiting list for the next available class.

Students with Special Needs
|
Coonara encourages application for enrolment from students with special needs. Within the capabilities of the organisation, every effort will be made to meet the additional needs of students - provided they meet the entry requirements of the course. Alternative delivery and assessment methods will be used when and where relevant.
|
Orientation space
|
All successful applicants will be required to participate in orientation activities at the commencement of their course. These activities will include return to study skills, employability skills, info tech assessment and gap training and an overview of the program of study.
|
Flexible learning and assessment procedures
|
Some courses are available via distance mode or via workplace training. Some courses may also include an online component. Student's individual needs in regards to flexible learning will be addressed at orientation or may be discussed with the Training Co-ordinator prior to enrolment.

RECOGNITION
Careers and Course Guidance service
|
Coonara Community House Inc. provides careers guidance and pathways planning services for all students. You may wish to make an appointment with our Guidance officer prior to enrolment to clarify your learning options.
|
Recognition of prior Learning/Current competencies
|
Your existing skills and knowledge may gain you advanced standing or credit towards the completion of your course. These skills may have been gained through previous study, employment, voluntary work or general life skills. If you would like more information about RPL for a particular course, please ask the Co-ordinator for an RPL kit for your chosen course. RPL may be applied for at any time during the course. Further details about RPL are provided at course information sessions and again at orientation. RPL is an automatic process in Certificate IV and above course enrolments at Coonara.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Be treated with respect and fairness

Students have the responsibility to:

- Treat other students and House staff with respect and fairness
- Abide by the Coonara House Code of Ethics
- Follow any resonable direction from staff
- Be punctual and regular in attendance at classes
- Submit assessment tasks by the due dates
- Behave in a responsible manner by not harassing or intimidating fellow students and come to class in a fit state to learn.

Coonara tutors have a responsibility to:

- Treat students and other staff with respect and fairness
- Abide by the Coonara House Code of Ethics
- Be punctual and commence classes at designated times
- Provide students with appropriate information about their progress in the class
- Provide a stimulating and supportive learning environment for students and assess them equitably

SPACE
Coonara has an appeals and complaints procedure for students who feel that their rights have been breached by fellow students or by Coonara. Full details of this procedure is available in the student handbook and on noticeboards in each classroom. Disciplinary procedures are also detailed in the handbook and on the noticeboards.

FEES AND CHARGES INFORMATION
Fees and charges at Coonara will depend upon a student's eligibility for government funding. Students who have not previously completed year 12 are the primary target group for government funded places. Students on pensions or with health care cards will be eligible for concessions. Full details of fees are provided in the course brochure. If you are unsure as to which fee applies in yoru case, please ask the House staff for clarification. Refunds are available for students withdraw from classes at Coonara. The refund depends on the original fee category (e.g. government funded students will not be refunded their first $55 of tuition fees as per the ministerial directions on fees and charges). Refunds will generally be pro rata according to what portion of the course has been completed prior to withdrawal. An administration charge of $10 or 10% of the course fee (whichever is the greater) will also be generally charged.

STUDENT SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE
Student support and assistance available.....
- Careers, course and pathways guidance and counselling. Individual appointments or small group sessions.
- Alternative assessments for those with learning difficulties.
- Support for those with literacy or numeracy issues including referrals to literacy and numeracy support services through the Outer Eastern Literacy Program based at Boronia library if needed.
- Free House membership and discounts on general adult education courses at Coonara.
- Information technology audit of student's skills and free gap training to ensure that all students can word process simple documents and use internet and email effectively for research and communication purposes.
